At the center of the mesmerizing rolling hills, resided a young shepherd. His life was unadulterated, and unsophisticated. His only responsibility was essentially to tend to his flock of sheep.
Their low murmuring and the murmuring of the breezes among the single tree on the peak were his only co-dwellers. Day after day, guarding his responsibilities instilled in him a sense of quiet fulfillment.
However, there were occasional moments of isolation, when the shepherd boy would yearn for companionship. In one such instance because of sheer tedium, the shepherd boy devised a troublesome plot.
Stories of predators preying on sheep had been around for a while in the village. So, the boy chose to used this fear and played a trick on the inhabitants.
One morning he raced into the village yelling “Wolf! A wolf is that has taken my sheep!” The scared villagers rushed website up the hills to offer assistance but discovered no beast.
The boy laughed at the confusion on their faces. This prank laughed for a few days more. But, one day, a real wolf actually attack the herd. The shepherd boy ran for help, shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one responded.
Frustrated and alone, the boy battled against the wolf but managed to rescue only few of his sheep. Heartbroken, he returned to the town only to receive a reprimand on honesty and the consequences of crying wolf.
His tale of this shepherd boy has been handed down generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the importance of honesty, the consequences of lying and the dangers of crying wolf. Moreover, it emphasizes how trust once violated, is tough to reclaim. It's a story as appropriate today as it was anciently.
